Decoding the Complexity of the Video Game Industry: An Integrated Framework and Future Research Directions

Abstract:

In this paper, we address the fragmented nature of research on the Video Game Industry VGI, which has become a leading force in the global entertnment market. Despite increasing scholarly attention to VGI, there remns a need for an organized framework that comprehensively encompasses its intricate structure and dynamic mechanisms. We synthesize key components from over 84 scholarly articles published within the last fifteen years into an evidence-based integrative framework. By examining the business landscape of this industry through a systematic literature review of leading business management journals, we elucidate relationships between pivotal elements and identify critical gaps that require further exploration.

Method:

We systematically analyzed relevant literature to construct our framework, focusing on the core concepts shaping VGI dynamics across various dimensions such as business, monetization strategies, technological advancements, market trs, regulatory impacts, consumer behavior, and ethical considerations. This allows for a comprehensive understanding of the industry's complexity and interrelationships.

Findings:

Our integrative framework highlights:

1. Monetization Strategies: The evolution from physical sales to digital distribution platforms and in-game purchases has transformed revenue.

2. Business Model Innovation: Companies are leveraging newlike subscription services, free-to-play with microtransactions, and live service games that require ongoing development and community engagement.

3. Regulatory Frameworks: Increasing scrutiny on content rating systems, player safety policies, and data privacy regulations necessitates dynamic regulatory responses by industry stakeholders.

Gaps Future Research Directions:

While the VGI is thriving, critical research areas are underexplored:

• Sustnability in the Video Game Industry: Environmental impact and strategies for eco-frily practices
